Our Story,
In 1885, Mr. Ponnuswamy of Sadarasapattinam established Smith Field Bakery in the heart of old Madras. Mr. Sundaram succeeded Ponnuswamy, to run the business until late 1900. Smith Field then passed to Mr.Shanker, who with his two brothers carried the century-old legacy with passion and commitment. Mr. Venkatesh, the fourth-generation owner, presently manages the operations along with his father, Shanker.
Smith Field bakery is a family business. Smith Field has established trust and authenticity among its patrons through its product quality and high standards. The commitment to quality is made possible by rigorous family governance and participation. The family business format makes it easier for Smith Field to stand by its values and not compromise quality for profits.
Smith Field is synonymous with its fresh bread baked every day. The dough is slow fermented. The slow fermentation makes the bread easily digestible and flavorsome. 90% of our production process is handmade. We employ machines only for mixing the dough. After mixing, artisan bakers prepare the dough for baking. The use of the hand enables the baker to feel the texture and thus control the process better. Besides our signature bread, we produce 25 types of artisan biscuits. Varieties include shortbread biscuits, ginger biscuits, Ragi biscuits, jam swirls, and the iconic old madras butter biscuits.
Our customers are associated with the bakery through generations. We have customers who walked as children with their parents into our shop then, now bring their children and reminisce about their childhood. We share a lasting bond with our customers!
